The Titans

• Crius asks "Which one of you is the liberator of the titans?" "This virgin." says Philius pointing to Gabrielle. She gives him a weird look.
• Gabrielle tells the titans: "This is Xena. She's my best friend."
  • "We honor all friends of the virgin goddess." Gabrielle casts a quick look at Xena. "You know, I'd rather you not tell everybody I'm a virgin. It's kinda personal, you know what I mean?"
• Verbal sparring between Gabrielle and Xena about the Titans.
  • Xena says: "Maybe there's a reason that the gods encased them in stone." "No, you're wrong. I trust them, Xena. You're just being too cynical." "Do you realize the power you hold?" "Yes." "It's a big responsibility." "She's up to it. She can do anything." Interrupts Philius. Xena ignores him. "How long do you think you can go on convincing them that you're a goddess?" "If anyone can do it, it's her. She has the aura of a goddess."
• Hyperion threatens Gabrielle. Xena intervenes.
  • "No, she's not going anywhere." "Who are you?" "Lets just say I'm the sacred one's protector."
• Xena gets jealous of Gabrielle and Philius
  • "Xena, Philius has something to tell you. He figured this out while we were working. He's so brilliant!" "I couldn't have done it without you Gabrielle!" "Oh don't be silly, I didn't help that much!" "No, you supplied the inspiration!" "Alright," interrupts Xena, with a disgusted look, "Let's hear it."
• Xena refuses to hear the plan when she finds out it will put Gabrielle in danger.
  • Philius explains that the scroll "...needs to be read by someone with the proper understanding of Dorian rhythms." "In other words, me." says Gabrielle. "Forget it. Too risky." says Xena. "I won't be captured. I'll wait 'til they're asleep and then I'll sneak in--" "Forget it Gabrielle!" Gabrielle says in a hurt voice with a shocked expression on her face: "She has no respect for me."
• Xena sees Gabrielle and Philius asleep together. Her expression is of hurt and disappointment.
  • "What's the matter?" asks Gabrielle. "Nothing, I just--" "Thought I did something without thinking?" "Well, if you did it's none of my business." "Yeah, that's right. It isn't." "Look, if this is about what I said before, I was tired." "You think I'm just a kid." "No, I don't. I just don't have time to convince you right now."*
• Philius announces Gabrielle is missing. Xena instantly knows it's about her.
  • "She's gone!" "She must be trying to prove herself to me."
• Gabrielle shows that there was no real affection between her and Philius.
  • Gabrielle: "You were almost my first." "And you were almost mine." He leans in for a kiss, but she stops him, smiles, and walks away.
• Xena and Gabrielle reaffirm their relationship.
  • Xena: "Why did you risk your life by going into that cavern alone?" "I wanted to make up for what I did so that you wouldn't hate me." "For your information I could never hate you. Your heart's always in the right place."

At the begining, the weird look Gabrielle gives Philius could be because she HAS had sex, just not the kind that Philius is thinking of. Which also explains the quick look she throws at Xena when it is next mentioned by Crius. Otherwise, this is a complicated psychological tale of what can build up in a relationship when either partner is not careful. Gabrielle does something foolish, ruling the titans, and Xena calls her on it. She is hurt, but her ego is somewhat smoothed over by Philius' instantly jumping to her defense. Gabrielle's bruised feelings try to spark jealousy in Xena by playing up the bond between Philius and herself. This jealousy play is just hurting Xena and causing her to back off. Hence, the initial rift. (But a very wee one at that.) Also, there is the first suggestion that Xena and Gabrielle are allowed to explore possibilites outside of their relationship when Xena says "...if you did, it's none of my business." One final note: Gabrielle, referring to Argo, says "You told me to take care of her." She is now a girl. (In Sins Of The Past Xena referred to her as "boy.")
