In Sickness and in Hell

  • The opening shot shows Xena, asleep, and we hear Gabrielle's voice, soothing, beconing, saying "Xena...wake up." Xena rolls to her side and smiles, eyes still closed.
  • In a cave, Xena is thinking out loud when she hears "Ooohs" and "Aaahs" from Gabrielle. She whirls to see Gabrielle, only to find her scratching her back on Xena's Chakram.
  • Xena needs to use the "bathroom" while Gabrielle is also attending to duties behind a bush. She grabs Gabrielle and throws her out. *
    • "Next time find your own bush!" yells Gabrielle.
    • "Girls, please, there's bushes enough for everybody!" says Joxer.
  • Xena attempts to do her usual "sum up" with Gabrielle
    • "This week's been kinda tough on everyone, I guess. But, you know, I'm always there for you and you're always there for me..."
Notes:
When i watched this episode the second time, pen in hand with which to take notes, i was expecting to be writing a lot. i remembered this as a VERY subtextual episode. As i finished the episode with very few notes taken, i realized that there were very few specific examples of subtext here. It was more the TONE of the episode that reveals anything about the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle. They are constantly bickering in the episode, like an old couple. The tone of their bickering, and the tone of the whole episode, is very playful. And this playfulness reveals as much about their affection for each other as a whole episodes of "I love you's."
Also, special attention should be paid to the episode's title, which is obviously a play on the phrase "in sickness and in health" which is from MARRIAGE ceremonies.
I can't believe I needed to have this one pointed out to me. Good work, Latincold!
