Endgame

    • At the begining, while Xena and Gabrielle are being coy and playing around, Xena stares at Gabrielle and says "Come one fishy, fishy, fishy..."
    • As Amarice holds Xena at bay, Xena claims "Oh, no, I surrender before Gabrielle," giving Gabrielle a look over Amarice's shoulder. (Thanks Paula!)
    • Gabrielle kisses Ephiny's forehead. (Yes, only lesbians show affection for those who've died. Really.)
    • Xena embraces Gabrielle as Gabrielle weeps over Ephiny's funeral pyre.
    Notes:
Surprisingly, not a lot of specific subtext in this episode, though there is a general mood that pervades it which implies to someone like me that there is more to their relationship. By this mood i am refering to their playfulness at the begining of the episode, then once we move into the main plot there is the constant respect with which they hold each other. Every decision is underscored by looks exchanged between the two of them as they have a lot of unspoken dialogue. Also, Xena spends a lot of energy making sure that Gabrielle is safe. Not only physicaly but morally. She makes sure Gabrielle is comfortable with everything that is going on, and that everyone repects Gabrielle's wishes. Xena even goes so far to try to espouse Gabrielle's new non-violent philosophy with a young Amazon. Even though Xena doesn't fully "get it," one can hear the respect in her voice.
