Fallen Angel

Fallen Angel

Teleplay by R. J. Stewart
Story by Rob Tapert & R. J. Stewart
Directed by John Fawcett
Synopsis and commentary:
Xena and Gabrielle arrive in the afterlife. No, this is not the afterlife of the greek gods where Xena has gone before. This is not the wherever-she-was afterlife Xena went to where she could still inhabit other people's bodies. This is not the amazon afterlife Gabrielle went to. This is yet ANOTHER afterlife. While chilling out on a rock, they are approached by some angels. Gabrielle, completely blissed out, moves forward to join them. Xena tries to restrain her, concern overwhelming her, showing that Xena keeps her cool even when dead, and that Gabrielle will always be her first concern. The angels are attacked by demons, and Gabrielle falls to hell.
Xena is, of course, a wee bit worried. She discusses with Michael, an arch angel,:
        "She has to be rescued."
"That's the responsibility of the arch angels."
        "No, it's MY responsibility."
"Yours? You're not even an angel. You're to be reborn in a new body."
"Well that's gonna have to wait. Right now I'm going after my friend."
        "That's impossible."
        "No it's not."
Then she jumps to hell. (Hard to be more dedicated to someone than that.) She is naturally saved by Michael, with whom she argues: "Michael, Gabrielle's soul an mine are destined to be together. I can't let her walk through hell alone."
Meanwhile, in hell, Gabrielle wakes up embraced by a sleeping Callisto. "Xena?" she asks.* "Aren't you the lucky girl?" taunts Callisto. "You get to spend eternity with me!"
In heaven (Are they in heaven? Or are they just chillin' out on a rock between heaven and hell?) Xena becomes an arch angel by choosing to jump into a cave full of fire rather than take a shower. When she plops her burning body into a pool of water, not only is she granted wings, but also a new outfit. (Yup, must be heaven.) Down in hell, Gabrielle seems to be having a hard time with her outfit. Dressed in little more than rags, she expresses her hunger (she is being tormented) by tearing her clothes. Then she is force fed the food of hell, and is painfully mutated into a demon, once again expressed by tearing at her clothes. Xena and the other arch angels thankfully arrive to rescue Gabrielle, which they do with relative ease. But since Gabrielle is now in ugly demon mode, Xena is quickly distracted by Callisto and decides to sacrifice her soul to rescue this attractive little filly. The arch angels dunk Gabrielle which for some reason cures her of being a demon. Naturally, her first question is "Where's Xena?"
Well, Xena is in hell and taking over. Gabrielle now needs to earn her wings to join in the imminent war between heaven and hell. What must she do? Walk into a cave with Callisto and have a supa-tender moment. Done.
Demons come pouring up from hell and Xena and Gabrielle must confront each other.
        "Gabrielle, we shouldn't be fighting."
        "You're right, Xena."
"I want to spend eternity with you. Won't you join me?"
Xena later adds: "Gabrielle, the love that we have, it's stronger than heaven or hell; it transcends good or evil; it's an end in itself. Our souls are destined to be together. Gabrielle, you can't let me walk through hell alone."
Oh yeah, while all this has been going on, Joxer, Amarice, and Eli have dispatched the two roman soldiers guarding Xena and Gabrielle's bodies. Eli uses his wonder powers, with the help of a happy Callisto, to bring our grrls back from the dead. As soon as they wake up, they go for each other's hand. "We're going to be together for eternity," says Gabrielle. "Yeah," replies Xena.
